Richmond County School Information
With an operating budget of $249 million and more than 33,000 students, the Richmond County School System is the eighth largest school system in Georgia and boasts the top academic school in the state.
Governed by an elected board of education, the school system operates 60 schools including eight comprehensive high schools, nine middle schools, 35 elementary schools, three magnet schools, three special schools and two charter schools.
The John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School serves students in grades 6 through 12 has consistently been named as one of the best schools in Georgia, and has been named the No. 1 academic school in the state each year from 1996 to 2009. Davidson has also been awarded the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education, the highest award a U.S. school can receive.
Augustus R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet Middle and High School is a public six-year magnet school in downtown Augusta, drawing students from grades 7 through 12 from all parts of Richmond County. The school received the Blue Ribbon Award in 2003 and received the 2005, 2006, and 2007 Georgia Achievement Platinum Award. In 2007 and 2009, it received a silver medal and was listed as one of the top schools in the nation by US News & World Report.
The Richmond County School System is in the third phase of an extensive construction program that will renovate older schools and add new schools, particular for its magnet program. This will include a fine arts elementary magnet school, a vocational magnet school, and a second magnet traditional elementary school.
