When most people think of Augusta, the prestigious Masters golf tournament comes to mind. Thousands of tourists and golf-enthusiasts visit the Garden City the first full week of April each year and enjoy the beauty and community spirit of Augusta and its neighbors. In addition to the Augusta National, there are almost 50 private and public courses for golfers to enjoy.
Augusta is 150 miles east of Atlanta, is easily accessible to most of the Southeast via its prime location on Interstate 20 and offers a regional airport. There are almost a half million residents in the Augusta/Aiken area. The Savannah River separates Augusta, GA from North Augusta, SC. Many residents enjoy the fact that Augusta is less than two hours from several major metropolitan cities, including Atlanta and Columbia, S.C., and about two hours from the ocean and two hours from the mountains.
From its mild climate to the year-round beauty of its parks and gardens, there is a lot to draw newcomers to our area.
Augusta was named by BizJournals.com as “The Most Affordable Place in the United States To Own A Home” in 2007. Housing in Augusta is approximately 48 percent lower than the national average. Overall, the cost of living is about 82 percent of the national average.
During the last several years, both Evans and Martinez in Columbia County have been named by CNN/Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in the country, making the top 100 list.
Aiken is the fastest growing community in the South Carolina, even surpassing Hilton Head.
Ft. Gordon serves as one of many economic anchors in the community. It is the largest communications-electronics facility in the free world. The installation covers 56,000 acres and is an important intelligence operation for all branches of the armed services, as well as NSA and Homeland Security.
Many Fortune 500 companies have manufacturing or support operations in the Greater Augusta area. Companies including Proctor & Gamble, John Deere, Serta, International Paper, Club Car, Bridgestone-Firestone, T-Mobile, Tyco Healthcare/Kendall, Kellogg’s, Solvay Advanced Polymers, Monsanto, NutraSweet, Castleberry’s, SOLO Cup, Olin, Con-Agra, FedEx Ground, and many others have selected our community and its highly-skilled labor force.
Augusta also serves as a major center for medicine and medical research and education. The Medical College of Georgia is a major training and education institution for physicians, surgeons, dentists, nurses, and other medical and health science professionals.
Ten highly-respected hospitals serve the needs of the community, including two VA hospitals, Eisenhower Army Medical Center and one hospital in Aiken. There are about 745 physicians per 100,000 people in the Garden City. The national average is 170 physicians per 100,000 people
